Saint-Petersburg
Saint-Petersburg was founded by first Russian emperor Peter the Great in 1703. Saint-Petersburg is Russia’s second largest city and bears the unofficial status of the country’s cultural capital. It is a center of cultural, historical and architectural attractions, Saint-Petersburg is known for its harmonious combination of Western European and Russian architecture.
Many famous architectural monuments of the city stretch along the historic embankments of the Neva. Moreover, the bridges and natural channels of the river gave Saint-Petersburg the nickname "Northern Venice". The city has various unofficial names, including Northern Palmyra, City of White Nights and Petropolis. Architecturally, it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Most Russians affectionately call him simply "Peter". The historic district of the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
