Baikal Lake
Lake Baikal is the deepest and largest natural reservoir in the world, filled with the purest fresh water. Its volume is one-fifth of the available supply of drinking water on the planet (excluding the glacial massifs of Greenland and Antarctica) and at least 4/5 - on the territory of Russia.
The Baikal ice is highly transparent. It freezes in January and opens in late spring. The lake significantly affects the climate. Winter comes here with a 2-week delay and is milder, than in neighboring regions. Summer, on the contrary, is cooler. Sunny days are numerous in Lake Baikal!
Baikal is called the Pearl of Russia, the Blue Eye of Siberia, the Diamond of the planet, the Siberian and Sacred Sea. Most of the species of plants growing here and animals, waterfowl and birds, living in these parts, are unique. The surrounding landscape impresses with its natural harmony and monumentality, the extraordinary beauty of the picturesque landscapes and the enchanting expanse. In 1996, the natural object was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Lake Baikal is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia and attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year.
